The Wayne Indoor track team opened their season on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 at Mt. Vernon’s Energy Fieldhouse for the Yellow Jacket Holiday Invitational. The 17-team invitational drew teams from mostly central Ohio and a few local teams from Dayton. The Warrior Boys team claimed the team title, scoring 138 points, while Gahanna Lincoln was a distance second, scoring 90 points. The Lady Warriors were runner-ups, scoring 92 points, just 6 points shy of champion Granville.
The boys had six individual champions, led by senior Keonte McGowan, who won the long jump with a personal best leap of 21 feet 6.75 inches. Fellow senior Nathanael Bentz won the weight throw, tossing 51-08. Junior Tyler Stargel was a double winner, taking top honors in the triple jump (42-9.75, a personal best) and 60 hurdles (8.48 seconds). Seniors Brendan Hill took first in the high jump, clearing 6-02, while senior Elisha Stroder won the 400-meter dash in 52.92 seconds.
Sanai Lynch, a junior, was the only individual winner for the lady Warriors, but set a new school indoor record, en-route to winning the long jump, with a personal best of 17-11.75 inches. Taylor Robertson in 2018, 17-5, set the old record. Lynch also was second in the triple jump with a leap of 34-7.75, while senior Shamaria Davis was third (34-3.75). Senior Jasmine Kennerson was second in the 200-meter dash, running 26.81 seconds.
