October 26th, 2018 – The Wayne Warrior football team is in the playoffs thanks to their overtime victory against the Trotwood Rams. Wayne needed a win in their regular season finale to keep their playoff hopes alive, and the Warriors delivered in thrilling fashion during overtime.
This was a back and forth game from start to finish. When one team scored or got a stop, the other responded with a score or stop of their own. It proved formidable that the game went to overtime tied at 35-35 given the seesaw nature of the game.
The Warriors only needed one offensive play in overtime to seal the win. Cameron Fancher ran in a 20 yard touchdown strike in the first play of overtime. The final score stood at 41-35 after Rashad McKee couldn’t convert the two point conversion. Trotwood failed to convert on downs in their lone possession in overtime.
McKee finished with 182 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and one interception. He also added 90 yards on the ground and one rushing touchdown. Devin Nelson lead the Warriors’ ground attack with 178 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Fancher finished with 38 yards to go with his touchdown in overtime.
Steven Victoria paced the receiving corps with 73 yards, Renz Johnson had 40 receiving yards, and Trevor Bom added 27 receiving yards. Justin Harris had one reception, but he made it count with a 27 yard touchdown catch.
Defensively, Harris and Matteo Rivas led Wayne’s defense with eight tackles each. Leonardo Howard had seven tackles and Deandre Ham tallied six tackles.
Wayne starts their playoff run on the road at the Hilliard Davidson Wildcats. Kickoff is scheduled for November 2nd at 7:00 pm. “We all are 0-0 now. Throw the records out the window, it’s playoff time,” said kicker Trevor Hawley on the team’s mindset heading into next week.
