Wayne 8 Fairmont 7
Wayne’s offense came to life and the combined efforts on the mound of Jacob Duncan, Nick Miller and Layne Riley were enough to propel our Warriors to a 2-game sweep of Fairmont who came into this series the #5 rated team in the area.
Trailing 2-0 entering the top of the 4th Wayne used some wildness on Fairmont’s part and timely hitting on their own part to take a 6-2 lead. No hit was bigger than Riley’s 2-run double to deep left field. Wayne starting pitcher Duncan kept his team in the game until the bottom of the 5th when he ran into trouble. Nick Miller came on to get the final two outs of the inning and also pitch a scoreless 6th but the Firebirds would not go away so easily. After adding an insurance run in each of the last two innings Wayne took an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the 7th and would need every run they had to escape. With a run in and a man on first base Riley came in for Miller in relief. Riley gave up two bloop hits but secured the win by striking out the last hitter to end the game and give Wayne two straight victories against a very good Fairmont team. Coming up big for the offense in the 6th and 7th innings for Wayne were Jacob Reedy (single/run), Tyler Wynkoop (RBI double) and Jake Jacobs (pinch-hit single/run scored).
