Wayne shuts out the Fairmont Firebirds

For the first time since 2008 the Wayne Warriors have beaten the Fairmont Firebirds by a score of  1-0. During that stretch there were 3 ties and losses the past 4 years. The game was 0-0 thru the first half with some stellar defense played by both squads. The warriors had some chances but could not get good contact on their shots. The second half was more of the same but then with 27 minutes left in the game Maronne Agha trapped a cross from Mitchell Hawley off of his chest and crushed the ball past the Firebird keeper and that would be all the scoring the Warriors would need. The defense stopped almost every attack before a shot could get off but in the final minutes a corner kick was headed right into the goal and Simon Oberkrom tipped it off the post to preserve the shutout. Brandon Burkey, Cameron Picard, Dustin Kmucha, Nick Riffle played outstanding this evening and as a team were much more aggressive putting pressure on the Firebirds all night long. The return of Mitchell Hawley and Trevor Hawley really made a big difference tonite in giving the Warriors a boost on offense.

On Saturday October 7th 2017 the Warriors recognized their 8 seniors before their game against Chaminade Julienne.  The Warriors have 8 Seniors this year Dustin Kmucha, Maronne Agha, Evan Gehret, SImon Oberkrom, Braden Kelly and tri-captains Cameron Picard, Brandon Burkey and Nate Johnson.  All 8 Seniors started the game against Chaminade Julienne.  The Seniors looked to go out with a win for their last game at Heidkamp Stadium but unfortunately this was not the case as Chaminade Julienne got off to a 2-0 lead and held on to defeat the Warriors 2-1.

Chaminade scored twice in the first half and looked to have control but immediately after their second score Nate Johnson took the ball down the middle and made a perfect pass thru the seam of the CJ defense finding Chase Wynkoop who scored his first tally of the season,  Then Jadon Scarpelli launched a beautiful shot that missed by inches from tying the game up before halftime.  In the second half CJ looked to put the game away when a penalty kick was awarded but Senior goalkeeper Simon Oberkrom stuffed the penalty kick and the Warriors still had a chance.  The Warriors put on a flurry of shot attempts but could not find the net and went down 2-1.  The Warriors will play their final game of the season this week at Springfield and then have drawn Troy for the first round of the High School State playoffs.
